Growing Through Mistakes

Grace for the Person I’m Becoming

I think one of the hardest parts of becoming a better person is being honest with yourself about the ways you haven't always been your best. It's easy to look back on things we've said or done and wish we could take them back, maybe we said something we didn't really mean because we were angry, maybe we spoke before thinking, maybe we hurt someone because we were hurting ourselves. Sometimes our emotions get the best of us and words come out that don't reflect what is actually in our hearts. Here's something I'm learning, making mistakes doesn't make you a bad person, refusing to learn from them does. Growing means being willing to look at yourself honestly. It means saying, "I shouldn't have said that." It means admitting, "I handled that wrong." It means being able to apologize without adding excuses or blaming someone else. Sometimes it means accepting that an apology doesn't automatically erase the hurt we caused and we can't control how quickly someone forgives us or how they feel about us afterward. All we can control is what we do differently moving forward. I've had moments where I've said things I wish I could take back. Things that came from anger, fear, frustration, or simply not knowing how to communicate what I was actually feeling, the truth is sometimes the words weren't even what I truly meant. I've learned that "I didn't mean it" doesn't always mean the other person wasn't hurt by it. That's where growth comes in. I don't want to use my mistakes as a reason to hate myself, I want to use them as opportunities to become someone I'm proud of.  I want to pause before I react I want to learn how to communicate instead of attack I want to stop letting temporary emotions make permanent damage I want to be softer with people, but also more accountable And most importantly I want my actions to eventually speak louder than the mistakes I've made in the past Becoming a better person doesn't happen overnight, It's not about suddenly never getting angry, never saying the wrong thing, or never making another mistake, it's about catching yourself sooner, it's about recognizing your patterns, it's about apologizing when you're wrong, it's about doing the uncomfortable work of changing, sometimes growth looks like realizing that the version of you who made certain mistakes was doing the best they knew how at the time. That doesn't excuse the mistake, but it can help you understand it and understanding yourself is where change begins. I don't want to spend my life wishing I could go back and change everything I've done wrong, I want to take what I've learned and let it change who I become because  the goal isn't to become someone who has never messed up, the goal is to become someone who learns, grows, takes responsibility, gives grace, and keeps trying to do better.I'm still learning. I'm still growing. I'm still making mistakes. I'm also becoming a better version of myself and I think there's something beautiful about that.
